Background:
The African Union Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Policy Framework aims to facilitate harmonization of AU Member States’ SPS policy priorities of SPS systems in Africa. The policy framework addresses diverse and intersecting needs with the objective to; establish harmonized science-based SPS systems; strengthen collaboration and trade facilitation; build technical capacity and; increase political support and public and private sector investment in SPS systems.
The Scientific Exchanges Program (SEP) supports USDA's agricultural research goals of promoting collaborative programs among agricultural professionals of eligible countries, agricultural professionals of the United States, the international agricultural research system, and U.S. entities conducting research. SEP is implemented by USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service, Global Programs, Fellowship Programs.
The SEP Fellowships in general was created to operationalize the joint effort of the AU and USDA to promote food security and economic growth in eligible countries by educating a new generation of agricultural scientists, increasing scientific knowledge and collaborative research to improve agricultural productivity, and extending that knowledge to users and intermediaries in the marketplace. The collaborative nature of the SEP training and research programs benefits the fellow, his or her home institution, and partner country; the U.S. host institution, its professors, researchers, and students; and the global agricultural sector by improving agricultural productivity, systems, and processes in partnering nations through the transfer of new science and agricultural technologies.
This application package focus on applicants interested in establishing and harmonizing SPS regulatory regimes across the eight Regional Economic Communities (RECs) of the African Union (AU). The goal will be to empower fellows to advocate for sound SPS policy to peers, decision-makers, and the public.
Eligibility Requirements:
Candidates will be evaluated, interviewed, and selected based on the following criteria:
- Citizen of a country in the AU.
- Good reading, writing, and speaking skills in English language.
- Master’s degree or higher with at least two years of practical experience (minimum).
- Currently employed by a university, research institution, or other scientific institution in a country in the AU.
- Intention to continue working in a country of the AU for a minimum of two years following the return from the United States.
- Researcher with a clear connection to SPS regulatory regimes, who can adapt lessons learned from the U.S. SPS regulatory model at both national and state levels.
- Proposal directly related to the research topic.

- The Earth Institute at Columbia University Postdoctoral Fellowship
The Earth Institute at Columbia University invites applications for 2-year postdoctoral fellowships that contribute to understanding critical scientific and social issues in global sustainable development. Specific areas of research include food security, energy systems, climate change, poverty reduction, disease, and environmental degradation. The multi-disciplinary program is open to U.S. and non-U.S. citizens who received their doctoral degrees within five years of beginning their appointments. The deadline for applications is 27 October 2021.
Eligibility: To be eligible for the program, candidates must have received their doctoral degrees (Ph.D., M.D. or J.D.) within five years prior to the start of the appointment. All doctoral requirements must be fulfilled and the degree awarded before the start of the appointment. Background
The sustainability movement has reached the business models of nearly every industry in the United States, and many companies, municipalities and states have set aggressive sustainability goals that include how waste streams are being managed. The EREF Board of Directors has set an initiative to ensure research funded reflects EREF’s long-term strategic plan to address all areas of integrated solid waste management, with a strong focus towards research that increased sustainable solid waste management practices.
EREF is an IRS 501(c)3 non-profit organization and is one of the largest sources of funding for solid waste research in North America. EREF is not affiliated with any other entity or group and governed by a duly elected Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is the decision-making body that has responsibility for establishing policies that define program interests and fundamental objectives to be served by the Foundation.

3. 7th edition of Science by Women Program request for applications for visiting Senior Research fellowships in Spanish Centers of Excellence
The Women for Africa Foundation (FMxA), in line with its mission of contributing to the development of Africa through the drive of its women, is launching the 7th Edition of SCIENCE BY WOMEN programme, with the aim to promote African women’s leadership in scientific research and technology transfer and to foster the capacity of the research centres in their home countries. The main goal is to enable African women researchers and scientists to tackle the great challenges faced by Africa through research in health and biomedicine, sustainable agriculture and food security, water, energy and climate change. Considering the exceptional challenge of the Covid-19 pandemic, some of the fellowships are focused on the research and innovation carried out by African women scientists from the diverse and interdisciplinary approaches.
Women’s lives are significantly affected by the repercussions of uncontrolled development; however, social, structural and economic barriers limit their capacity to tackle the great challenges faced by the continent. The gender disparities in science and technology in both the public and private spheres affect Africa’s population as a whole. Narrowing this gap, which has severe consequences on the balanced and sustainable development of African countries, is vital to achieve long-term progress and equal growing. The programme´s ultimate goal is to enable African women researchers to play a leading role in the transition of Africa to a knowledge-based and innovation-led economy through research that can be transferred into products, processes, services and technologies having impact on people´s lives.

- Partnerships for Enhanced Engagement in Research (PEER) 2021/2022 Solicitation: Challenges and Innovations Related to COVID-19
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is the US Government’s (USG) preeminent foreign assistance agency. The agency is dedicated to helping foreign nations meet the needs of their citizens by providing healthcare, education, and economic opportunity to reduce poverty and promote democratic, resilient societies. The Innovation, Technology, and Research (ITR) Hub at USAID brings together a diverse set of partners to discover, test, and scale breakthrough solutions to address critical challenges in international development (https://www.usaid.gov/innovation-technology-research). A key element of this strategy is the support of scientific and technological research through the Partnerships for Enhanced Engagement in Research (PEER) program. PEER is a competitive awards program open to researchers in select USAID presence countries to partner with US researchers currently receiving USG funding. PEER funding goes directly to the international researcher and is designed to support research and capacity-building activities on topics of importance to USAID. Since its inception in 2011, PEER has supported research awards from a wide range of academic disciplines including the natural, physical, social, behavioral, and economic sciences, as well as engineering. Projects funded under this year’s call for applications will receive one-year awards of up to US $70,000. In addition, they will receive personalized training and guidance from USAID’s Research Technical Assistance Center on developing evidence-to-action plans and communications products.
The PEER proposal submission process has two phases:
Phase 1: A brief pre-proposal is required for all applicants. The deadline for submission of pre-proposals is October 22, 2021.
Phase 2: The deadline for submission of full proposals is January 28, 2022.
