Sustainability through "Greening" refers to the process of adopting environmentally friendly practices and strategies to achieve sustainability. This involves improving processes, lifestyles, and economic models to reduce negative environmental impacts and become more ecologically responsible.

Key Aspects of Sustainability Through Greening

Environmental Protection

Implementing actions like planting trees to sequester carbon, managing waste properly, and reducing pollution from air, water, and land.

 Resource Efficiency

Minimizing resource use per unit of product or service, such as using less energy, water, and raw materials through techniques like "Cleaner production".

Green Economy

An economic model that is sustainable and inclusive, aiming to improve human well-being and social equity while significantly reducing environmental risks. Our concept: 'an economy in which there is no waste'.

Green Initiatives & Practices

Organizations and individuals can implement various green initiatives, such as using eco-friendly products, energy-saving equipment, and reducing paper consumption.

Innovation & New Markets

Greening sustainability can stimulate innovation, lead to new green technologies and services, and create new markets and job opportunities.

Policy & Government Action

Governments play a crucial role through policies like subsidies for green technologies, emission regulations, and investing in green infrastructure.

Examples in Practice at BUC

Waste Management

Composting organic waste can reduce methane emissions and enrich soil, while recycling reduces the extraction of new resources.

Water Conservation

Harvesting rainwater from roofs is an example of the university reducing water costs, without cutting down on supply.

Education

"Greening" has been integrated into our curriculum through a university course called "Greening for Sustainability". This course is mandatory for every student admitted at BUC and is taught in first year.

Research

Our research is focused on our niche. We are actively working to reduce our own environmental footprint through initiatives like conservation of wetlands, planting of indigenous trees, and utilization of 'waste' as a resource.

Sustainability Reporting by the BUC Niching Committee

Bomet University College (BUC) is working on developing and publishing a sustainability report for the first time in the 2025/2026 academic/financial year. This follows years of commitment to sustainability as captured in its strategic goals, aimed at making BUC a "Premier Green University".

"After ensuring and facilitating the participation of BUC in UI Greenmetric ranking last year and this year, the Niching Committee is now committed and totally focused on the next goal of publishing annual sustainability reports."

— Prof. Orori Kengara, Chairperson BUC Niching Committee & Greening Champion

On 9th October 2025, Bomet University College (BUC) held a formal handing-over ceremony for 23 sports balls and two trophies won by the Karate Team during the Kenya Universities Sports Federation (KUSF) Indoor Games held on 3rd and 4th October at Kabarak University. The event was presided over by the Principal, Prof. Charles Mutai.

The sports equipment, comprising 6 soccer balls, 13 volleyballs, and 4 basketballs, was part of a generous donation from COMUNIDAD SAGRADA FAMILIA NAZARENA MAR DE FE, Mexico, an international partner supporting youth and sports development at BUC.

This contribution follows a successful sports grant proposal developed by Dr. Anthony Waiganjo and Dr. Lucy Ngundo, aimed at promoting youth participation, gender equality, and disability inclusion in sports. The consignment, valued at KES 174,000, raises the total number of balls donated to 34, including an earlier contribution of 11 balls purchased with a KES 65,000 grant (equivalent to 10,000 Mexican Pesos) from the same donor. The latest parcel was delivered via Posta Courier Services after customs clearance in Nakuru.

With this donation, the proposed grant target of KES 200,000, comprising both financial and in-kind support, has been fully achieved.

During the ceremony, it was proposed that one soccer ball and one volleyball be donated to St. Michael Primary School, Bomet, as part of BUC’s community engagement and outreach initiative.

Bomet University College extends its sincere appreciation to COMUNIDAD SAGRADA FAMILIA NAZARENA MAR DE FE for their continued generosity and partnership, reaffirming its commitment to accountability, transparency, and sustainable collaboration in advancing sports and youth development.

Bomet University College hosted the KIPPRA Student Mentorship Programme, an initiative aimed at empowering Kenya’s youth through professional development, career management, innovation, and talent promotion.

Students participated in interactive sessions designed to strengthen their employability skills, personal branding, and entrepreneurial readiness, highlighting the importance of aligning individual talents with national development priorities.

Key discussions emphasized youth-led innovation and entrepreneurship as engines of socioeconomic transformation, and the need to integrate youth talents into public planning and budgeting. Participants also learned how devolution can advance youth talent development through county-level opportunities and equitable resource allocation.

In addition, health and wellness sessions underscored the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse, promoting positive character formation as the foundation for nurturing productive, responsible youth.
